HCS/321; Week 3 discussion:
It is highly important for health care managers to have strong conflict management skills in order to keep the work environment healthy. Not only for the sake of their co-workers but for the sake of the patients as well. Strong conflict management skills can keep our patients happy and diffuse situations. For example, a medication that cannot be dispensed due to being too soon or doctor orders; conflict management can prevent an occurrence from happening and the patient getting aggressive depending on the situation.
It is also important to keep a good attitude between the workers because that reflects on the manager as well. Being able to have the co-workers communicate and take care of any conflicts that might arise within in a timely and effective will make the workplace more efficient. Conflict resolution is essential for a healthy work environment and without it could cause a breakdown in communication and collaboration ultimately leading to increased patient errors. Conflicts in the workplace can also lead to co-workers not having good relationships and making the shift or the area inefficient. There are complex styles of conflict management and some use one style more than others, the style is dependent on the situation and who exactly we are dealing with. A good health care manager will be able to use the style depending on the person and the situation in order to make the experience a positive and effective one. (Johansen, 2012)
