Discussion 1: This week’s reading from the text is about Congress.  In this reading, you learned (and may, in fact have already known) that the U.S. Congress is made up of two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate.  This type of two-chamber legislature is very common at the state government-level, as well: all but one state employs a similar system.  The one exception to this practice is Nebraska, who has a unicameral, or single chamber, legislature.  Here is the Nebraska Legislature’s description of its system (please read it and watch the short video describing it): Congress and Presidency Assignment  https://www.nebraska.gov/government/legislative/ (Links to an external site.)

What do you think about Nebraska’s unicameral legislature?,  What are the costs and benefits of this type of system?,
Should we (as a society) consider a similar system for the United States Congress?,  Why or why not? Congress and Presidency Assignment

Discussion 2:

This week’s reading from the text is about the Presidency.  In this reading, you learned (and may, in fact have already known) that individual president’s are limited by the Constitution to two terms.  This two-term limitation policy is also in place for governors (the state-version of the federal executive official) in almost all of the 50 states.  The one exception to this is Virginia, where a governor is limited to a single term.  Here is a relatively-recent article describing this policy: https://wamu.org/story/17/09/28/single-virginia-governors-commonwealth-cant-stand-re-election-change/ (Links to an external site.)

What do you think about Virginia’s policy for a one-term limit on a governor’s service?,  What are the costs and benefits of this policy?,
Should we (as a society) consider a similar policy for the President of the United States?,  Why or why not? Congress and Presidency Assignment
