Research Ethics and Article Critique. Throughout the past seven weeks, you have devoted time each week to the CITI certification. Each module was focused on some aspect of research ethics, its history, requirements, protected groups, and more. Understanding and applying the principles of research ethics is necessary to protect participants, organizations, and you. To close this course, you have two requirements: complete an article critique, and complete your CITI certification. How do you determine the usefulness of an article when searching the NCU Library? Do you read only the abstract, or do you read the findings to determine the worth of adding value to your paper? Perhaps you should be more critical of the works you choose. When manuscripts are submitted to journals for publication, a rigorous process begins. The manuscript can be scrutinized using rubrics, sent to independent reviewers, or sent for external review by a specialist in the field. This entire process may take 3-4 months; and still, there is no guarantee of acceptance. All these steps are useful for ensuring that the editorial board members of a journal adhere to the publication’s mission and that quality standards are maintained. In this final week, the readings help you to focus on the quality aspects of published manuscripts. You now know the basics of the qualitative methodology and research ethics. Visit the NCU Library. Locate a qualitative peer-reviewed article that relates to your research interest. Then, write a critique of the article that incorporates the concepts learned in this course. Using complete paragraphs and APA formatting, identify and explain the following in the critique of your selected article: Full citation of the article. Introduction – Write an introductory paragraph that includes a thesis statement and background information related to the problem. Problem statement – Use the scripted statement from Week 1 to identify and analyze the stated problem for completeness. Purpose of the study – Use the purpose statement to identify possible weaknesses in the stated purpose. Research question – Remember that qualitative research questions are how or why queries. Methodology and design – Explain why the qualitative method was best for this investigation and rationalize why other designs would not be appropriate. Identify the chosen design and why other designs would not work. Research ethics – Based on your progress with the CITI modules and assigned readings, identify ethical considerations associated with qualitative research and proffer solutions or processes to minimize risk to participants that the article does not address. Analysis – Provide a comprehensive analysis of the research data collection and analysis procedures. Be sure to support with research that explains these data collection and analysis procedures were the most appropriate for each study. Other procedures – Discuss other data collection and analysis procedures that could have also worked for the study, based on research regarding data collection and analysis procedures. Conclusion – Conclude with an assessment of the overall quality of the article. Length: 3-5 pages Your critique should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic.
