Help Avoid a Climate Disaster. How do YOU think we can help avoid a climate disaster? Research an existing emerging technology that can reduce green house gas pollutants in our atmosphere (either by reducing emissions or by removing CO2 that has already been emitted).

Help Avoid a Climate Disaster

Present a clear, concise “project pitch” to the class (“investors”) describing this technology and convincing us to invest in the technology. In your presentation, provide a thesis statement (like in your book review), address Gates’s 5 Questions (listed below), and address how the technology relates to ESEM principles. Your presentation should be ~10 minutes in length (shorter is fine if you can cover all the necessary information in less time). The final slide of your presentation should include your references.

Gates’s Five Questions:

  1. How much of 51 billion tons are we talking about?
  2. What is your plan for cement? (This, obviously, is only applicable if your technology is related to cement.)
  3. How much power are we talking about?
  4. How much space do you need?
  5. How much is this going to cost?

Earth Systems Engineering and Management considerations:

  1. Capability to design, engineer, and manage, through dialog and continual feedback, integrated built/human/natural systems
  2. Achieve the multivariate and sometimes mutually exclusive goals and desires of humanity
  3. Personal, social, economic, technological, and environmental dimensions
  4. Constraints imposed by the states and dynamics of existing complex adaptive systems

In-class presentations on Monday, August 9th are highly encouraged. However, if you are not comfortable presenting in class you may submit a written paper (~5 pages) instead.
